A computer based dvr vs standalone dvr

Postby admin on Sat Jun 13, 2009 1:40 pm

Should someone buy a computer based dvr or a standalone based dvr, a standalone based dvr is an embedded digital video recorder meaning everything in one component, one box with a dvr embedded within the motherboard . The computer based dvr or some call pc based dvr is a pc with a digital video recorder capture board installed. Each has its own pros and cons. I would like to hear from the member which one they think is better?

If the question is stability, then the standalone DVR will win out, but that is because of how end users use them. Standalone DVR's are setup once and left alone for most of there lives. PC's however, do not receive the same treatment. It is when the end user uses the Computer Based DVR as a personal or business computer that problems arise. Instablily comes from adding other programs, applications, and upgrades. If a computer based DVR is used strictly as a DVR, I believe it will be as stable as any standalone.

I agree thats right, but really stability is based on the pc setup. Making sure all the pc or computer parts are within or beyond the recommendations of the capture board are extremely important. We had success on pc based system that lasted over 6 years with no problems. One other issue is customers usually with pc based dvr usually use it for daily work such as browsing the internet, creating files and email and so on. which slows down the system lowers the life expectancy of the system.
