I was looking through security surveillance systems with a friend the other day, and he asked me something that got me thinking. How readily is digital video evidence acceptable in court?

Yeah, a lot of people worry about that detail, since a surveillance system is all about catching criminal activity red-handed. Video recordings are admissible as evidence and the digital storage of these has not altered this. It is of course the courts’ decision whether to accept or decline any evidence, although digital video evidence is routinely accepted in court. Remember that it is important to maintain an audit trail while any video evidence is in police custody.

That's what I had assumed but I needed to be sure. Thanks.

I believe the most important part is having time stamp overlay recording over the video while its recording as proof of time. Another important factor is video continuity. Meaning if an event happened at camera 1 and object or person moved to camera 2 its better if there is some overlap in the images.
